Church of Saint Roque
Largo Trindade Coelho
A Jesuit church, listed as a Nacional Monument. It was built in the sixteenth century (1573). It is considered one of the most important churches in Portugal and a true prototype of portuguese Jesuit churches.
The ceiling painting was made beetwen 1584 and 1590. In the first phase Francisco Venegas was envolved in the quadratura painting, and in a second phase Amaro do Vale was responsible for the central painting and the biblical episodes. The allegorical theme concerns the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Christ`s Passion.
This church houses a national treasure, the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, commissioned by the Roman architects Luigi Vanvitelli and Nicola Salvi.
Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation

The church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação was designed by the arquitect Manuel Caetano de Sousa (1768). The painting of the chancel was the result of a partnership between Simão Caetano Nunes and Gaspar Vaz Raposo – who was responsible for the ornaments. The painting was already conclued in 1784.

The church of the Martyrs, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, was built on the architectural plans of Remígio Francisco de Abreu. The ceiling painting in the main nave is by Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, assisted by José António Narciso.
Church of Saint Sacrament
The church of the Blessed Sacrament it´s another post-earthquake building from 1755 (pombaline architecture). The architectural plans were draw up by Remígio Francisco de Abreu and Manuel da Costa Negreiros.
The painting in the nave of the church features a unique composition by Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, depicting The Triumph of the Lamb. This painting is framed by various architectural elements, in a true tromp l'oeil effect.
